5 Expensive Content Marketing Mistakes and How You Can Fix Them in 5 Minutes or Less

Content marketing is one of the best ways to promote a website online. If you are not actively sharing the content on your website you are missing out on a lot of traffic and potential clients!

Unfortunately, content marketing can be a little tricky, and people who are new to online business often make a few expensive content marketing mistakes.

In this article, we will talk about some content marketing mistakes to avoid that are burning a hole in your budget.

On the upside, most of these mistakes are simple and can be fixed with a couple of tweaks,  in fact, most of these mistakes can be fixed in five minutes or less!

If you want to optimize your business website for maximum conversions and save money, then this article is for you.

Content Marketing Mistake #1: Not Investing in Quality Content

Most people, when they start promoting their business online, will assume that their websites should have as much content as possible.

On one hand, there’s some truth to that assumption, but on the other, it can create a lot of problems for your website’s performance.

Most small business owners will hire a search engine optimization company that mass produces chunks of text and publishes the chunks of text on random websites for back-links.

Unfortunately, that’s an expensive mistake.

You should focus on creating and publishing only high quality content on other high quality websites, one article on a top website is much more powerful than hundreds of articles in strange article directories.

Don’t try to write as much content as possible. Don’t hire a company that mass produces content for you (unless the content is decent).

Too many small business owners blow their entire budget on hiring writers that mass product junk content for them.

In a nutshell, avoid hiring back-link companies and other shady online marketing services, it’s not necessary, and it can be harmful to your business.

Content Marketing Mistake #2: Hiring an Inexperienced Content Strategist

Starting a website without a content marketing strategy in place is a common mistake that people make online. I know creating a content strategy can seem like a daunting task, but in reality, it’s really simple.

You simply have to understand your niche and create articles that are more likely to receive a positive response.

Unfortunately, a lot of people who call themselves content strategists don’t fully understand the power of certain types of content. Like I mentioned in the previous section, the most common content marketing tactic (which is harmful now) is to mass produce articles on various websites for back-links.

If your current content strategist recommends the above tactics, maybe it’s time to find a new content strategist.

Content strategists can be expensive, and it’s important to make sure that they have experience to back up the price, otherwise, it’s a waste of money and time.

Wondering what type of content works best for traffic? I talk about it in one of my previous posts but I’ll summarize it here for you.

  • Product Reviews
  • List Articles
  • How to Articles
  • Info Graphics
  • Ultimate Guides
  • Interviews

(Want to learn more about writing content that converts? Check out Stop Pitching Clients)

Use the above content types to create a content schedule and your website will see a wave of targeted traffic guaranteed.

Content Mistake #3: Not Targeting Keywords

All the content on your website should revolve around a few keywords.

The vast majority of small business websites fail to target certain keywords and therefore miss out on a lot of potential traffic and clients.

How do you find keywords to target?

You can either use Google’s Keyword Planner or you can use a keyword research tool that simplifies the data for you and makes it possible to create lists of keywords.

It’s called Jaaxy

Long-tail keywords are also important.

Look into keyword research and learn the ropes, it’s not as complicated as it seems, and avoid keyword stuffing and other black-hat marketing tactics.

Content Marketing Mistake #4: Publishing Guest Posts on Unrelated Websites

As I mentioned earlier, a lot of small business owners hire marketing companies that often engage in immoral marketing strategies.

I don’t mean to say that all marketing agencies are worthless, on the contrary, I believe there are plenty of top-notch marketing agencies out there, it’s only a matter of finding the right company for your needs.

On the other hand, there are also a lot of scam artists and other people who would be more than happy to separate you from your hard earned cash.

With that in mind, a lot of these so called marketing agencies (or search engine optimization companies) will claim to publish articles (with a link back to your website) on various blogs for back-links and traffic.

The problem is that they rarely list the blogs that will publish your content. In most cases, they publish the articles as guest posts on unrelated websites with little traffic. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that this is a bad marketing tactic.

The solution, however, is simple; find related websites and publish your own guest posts. Contrary to popular opinion, it’s not difficult to publish a guest post on a popular website. Guest posting is one of the most popular content marketing strategies out there and one of the most effective as well.

When it comes down to it, all you need is an excellent idea, an article idea that benefits the website’s business and also promotes your business. I recommend checking out my blog-post writing tips.

Can’t write? Maybe I can help.

Content Marketing Mistake #5: Inefficient Link Sharing on Social Media

Social media plays an important role in content marketing but most people don’t use it to it’s full potential.

I recommend creating a Twitter and Facebook account for your business, those are the two social media websites that will benefit your business the most. There are others that are worth looking into too, like Linked or Pinterest, but I have found that Twitter and Facebook are the most effective.

I suggest that you avoid sharing links to your website in random Facebook groups; that’s one of the best ways to be flagged as a spammer, and Facebook doesn’t appreciate spammers.

You should sync all your social media accounts with your website and make sure that all your content is shared on social media automatically; it will safe you the trouble of manually sharing the links. This will free up more time in your schedule and make it easier for your followers to interact with your content.

Next, focus on building a loyal following on social media and be as active as possible, that means, replying to comments, interacting with followers, engaging in activities, and more.

So we are reaching the end of this article, let’s wrap it up with some more content marketing advice.

Content marketing is not that complicated, and it shouldn’t be expensive, most content marketing strategies are free. Unfortunately, a lot of business owners fall for the shady promises of gurus and end up wasting a lot of money on strange marketing tactics.

If you noticed that you are experiencing one or all of the points discussed in this article, then make some changes, I guarantee you will see some positive improvements.

Nowadays the internet is littered with promises of a home based business. I’m sure you have seen the advertisements with low quality graphics and comic-sans fonts that seem to pop up on every website that you visit.

“Make a thousand dollars a day!” they scream at you from all corners of the internet, hooking desperate people with promises of wealth while they take your cash and run.

It’s a nuisance and most of those links are scams. Too many scams and too much misinformation, is it really possible to start a home based business?

Of course it is!

I’m here to tell you that it is possible. I’ll even point you in the right direction. Once you’re done reading this article you will realize that it’s not as difficult as people make it seem to start a home based business.

In fact, it’s really quite easy!

First off, there are many different types of home based businesses. I can’t cover all of them, but we will talk about the basic home based business plan; make a website and make it profitable.

In this article you will learn about some potential home-based business ideas. You’ll learn how to set up a simple website, the basics of search engine optimization, and some tips on how to make your website profitable. You should be able to take it from there.

So if you are wondering how to start a home based business online then you came to the right place!

Turns out you can create a business online in just a few hours.

Step one: Create Your Website

There’s a lot of information about how to create a website online, so if you are confused, Google will have the answers you seek. In general, a website is easy to set up; all you need is a hosting account and a domain name.

But first you need to decide on the purpose of your business. What’s your idea? What’s your business plan? Is there a need for your services?

Most people start working online, dabble in a few projects, create a website or two, and then give-up because the traffic doesn’t show up and no sales are made. I know because it happened to me.

The first website that you create will likely not be successful, unless you base it on solid research.

It’s incredibly important to decide on the topic of your website before you start working on the actual website. Otherwise, all the articles that you publish will be random and it will be difficult to attract highly targeted traffic.

Forget about your passion, unless you’re an expert in a particular industry that you’re passionate about you should not create a website based on your passion. You should create a website that is based on a need in the marketplace.

Strangely enough, the online world is much like the offline world, businesses need to solve a problem or make something easier, it’s the same with websites. Most people don’t follow that rule and end up launching businesses that crash and burn a few months later and are left wondering what happened.

So once you have your website under control and in your hands, here are some business ideas that you can attach to it…

1. Write a Blog

A website gives you a platform to share your thoughts and experiences with the world, that’s one of the reasons blogging is such a popular activity; people want to be heard.

Similarly, most people want to read blogs that are entertaining and honestly reveal the thoughts and experiences of the author.

Blogs can be turned into highly profitable websites, if done correctly, read this article on how to turn a blog into a cash machine.

Blogging is one type of home based business that does not require much at all, all you have to do is write about a topic, over and over, until your website is full of well-written articles. The articles will bring in traffic and you can use the traffic to sell products.

(Maybe you don’t want to write articles, in that case, I can write articles for you)

So blogging is one home based business that can be setup in a matter of minutes. If you treat it like a business, it will grow like a business, don’t be casual about it.

Word-press is the easiest platform for bloggers, host your own blog and avoid sub-domains like Blog Spot.

Okay, so let’s say that you don’t want to create a business that is based on writing articles about a particular topic, that’s fine, there are still plenty of other options for you.

2. Be a Consultant

Do you have a particular skill or knowledge about a specific industry that can benefit other people?

One home based business idea would be to provide consultations. Business owners are always on the look-out for people who can benefit their business in one way or another, that person can be you.

You can create a simple website with a list of your services, rates, and other information, then it’s just a matter of contacting business owners and advertising your services. It’s not as complicated as you think.

Just make sure to provide a valuable service. You can setup a simple consultant website in a few minutes.

3. Create a Portfolio Website

Do you know how to create cool logos with Photoshop?

Can you write?

What about web-design?

What services can you provide to people?

Create a portfolio for your services. I know a few people who have websites for their services and clients often contact them directly through their websites.

Just throw up some samples of previous work and create a professional portfolio, complete with rates and detailed information about your services.

The next step is to market your website and try to bring in traffic, like, with a business blog (I can help you write articles)!

Portfolio websites are perfect for freelancers. You can even create a business card for your website and use it at networking events. I’m in the process of creating mine.

Below is a list of some freelance skills that you can offer people…

  • Photoshop
  • Web Design
  • Consultations
  • Data Entry
  • Virtual Assistant
  • Sales
  • Social Media Management
  • Online Marketing
  • Proofreading
  • Accounting

Can’t do any of those with confidence?

That’s okay, here’s another idea…

4. Launch a Startup

Most of the most popular websites nowadays started as simple websites that nobody would have cared much about, but they filled a need, solved a problem, and slowly evolved into a powerhouse.

You can create a Startup on a much smaller budget than you think. Some people only invest money into an hosting account and a domain name and diligently work on their websites.

There are hundreds of differs services that you can offer people online. It just takes a bit of outside the box thinking and an unbreakable will to complete your project.

That’s It:

So there you have it, four ways to start a home business online, all of these ideas don’t require much initial investment at all.

Now you have a better idea of how to start a home based business online!

5 Tips on How to Get Traffic From a Blog and Make More Sales

When you think of the word “blog” or “blogging” the first image that pops into your head is a simple website that people use to write down their thoughts on various topics, like travel, food, fitness, and what not.

It’s true that blogs are mainly created for entertainment purposes and most people don’t make any money from their blogs.

But professional businesses can also benefit from blogging.

How can one person write hundreds of articles and not make a single cent while another person writes a few articles and generates revenue on a daily basis?

Let’s find out.

If you are launching a new business or looking for a way to promote your business with content marketing then you will need articles for your new website.

I can help write those articles for you. Click the link and check out my services, it might save you a lot of time, frustration, and cash.

You’re here because you’re interested in creating a blog that brings in traffic and converts into sales.

So, let’s begin.

1. Target a Keyword or Key Phrase

Keyword targeting is not that complicated, all you have to do is make sure that your articles include a certain key phrase.

I recommend including the key phrase at least two times in the content of your blog posts, it should also be in the URL and Title.

For an additional bonus, try to format the keyword as a header whenever possible. Word-Press makes it incredibly easy to do that.

How to Get Traffic From a Blog: Understanding Keywords

Let’s take a moment to expand a bit on what keywords are and how to use them to get traffic to your website.

When it comes to finding keywords to target, here’s one tip that has made all the difference. I learned this tip from trial and error and a few failed websites.

Think about your ideal client, what problems do they need to overcome? What are some challenges in their industry? How can you solve their problems?

For instance, let’s take an example from my website, I used the above tip to come up with the idea for this article.

I specialize in writing blog-posts for small businesses. What type of problems do people with blogs have to deal with on a regular basis?

They don’t have enough traffic. What’s the title of this article? Understand the point I’m trying to make?

You have to imagine your ideal client and then imagine what it is like to be in their shoes.

Next, do the research, and work on providing solutions to their problems. Next, open a keyword tool, and use your ideas to find some low-competition key words to include in your articles.

It’s a really simple process but one that can be used to create a flow of extremely targeted traffic that will convert into sales.

(Wondering what keyword tools to use? I use Jaaxy)

2. Always Include Internal Links (Where Relevant)

This is for convenience and search engine optimization purposes. It makes sense to spread out the traffic to as many different pages as possible. It would be counter-productive to keep all the traffic on one article.

Unfortunately, a lot of people make that mistake. If you have a brand new blog (which is the case for most businesses) then you won’t have anything to link to in your articles.

In this case, I would link to your service pages or other relevant pages where people learn more about your business.

Every new article that you publish should link to other articles or pages on your website. Internal links are important not just for search engine optimization but people use them too.

3. Share Content From Other Bloggers in Your Niche

I used to think that everyone is on their own when it comes to working online. I thought other, similar, websites and blogs were my enemies and there was no way that I would do anything to help them out.

Turns out, I was wrong; and I was missing out on one powerful way to bring in extra traffic. Sharing content from other bloggers in your niche is a superb way to bring in additional traffic.

There are a few ways that you can do this…

One, share their articles on your social media profiles, send some traffic in their direction, they’ll like return the favor in the future.

Two, write an article based on one of their articles and introduce an alternative opinion. It helps if you are an expert in your industry and can back-up claims with facts and figures.

Three, do a monthly or weekly “Bloggers to Follow” campaign where you share all your favorite websites with your readers. These articles are excellent for networking and can bring in a lot of traffic because the other bloggers will share the article on their social media profiles.

Fourth, do a review on one of their products or services. I recently did this with my previous article, Bamidele Onibalusi’s The Freelance Writer’s Success Starter Guide Product Review, and not only did I appear on Bamidele’s radar, but he emailed me and said thanks for writing a positive review about his product. I built a connection.

There’s a lot more to talk about regarding these topics, but I will have to save it for another article.

 4. Sell Something (Product, Service, etc)

You have to sell something to make cash. Most bloggers don’t realize that they can make money from a blog and they write articles solely for recreational and entertainment purposes. They’re missing out on a lot of potential revenue!

This will also help with traffic because a product will be associated with your name. When someone searches for the name of your product your blog will pop up in search engine results.

Every successful blog sells something; a service, a product, an affiliate product – you have to sell something or you won’t make any money – it’s that simple.

At the moment, I sell a service, I create content for small business owners.

You can write an eBook. Write about your experiences. Write about what you learned. Slap a price tag onto it and see what happens. Chances are it will bring in some cash.

Except, everyone is publishing eBooks nowadays, anyone and they’re cat can publish a book online, it’s ridiculously simple.

So, stand out, be different. Write about you. You are different, aren’t you?

Selling an eBook on a blog is one of the best ways to turn your website into a cash machine. Worse scenario; it doesn’t sell, but at least you learned how to write a book. You can do better next time.

Experience is valuable.

5. Promote a Product as an Affiliate

Product reviews are perfect for bring in traffic. Write reviews and include affiliate links.

Some people build their website for the sole purpose of promoting an affiliate product. If you want to take that route, one of the best types of content for your website would be product reviews. Look for similar products, write an honest review, and then recommend your affiliate product.

Product reviews always have a higher conversion rate. It’s one of the reasons why there are so many product review websites for Amazon products, the owners earn a commission for each sale, it’s not the best way to make cash online, but it does work for some people.

Like I mentioned earlier, make sure to link to your affiliate products in every article that you publish.

To summarize, blogs can be extremely profitable, but most people don’t know how to set up a blog that is designed to make money. If you want to make a profitable blog remember these five tips:

  • Target keywords when you write articles
  • Include internal links
  • Share content from other bloggers in your niche
  • Sell something (services, books, etc)
  • Promote an affiliate product.

Don’t forget that you need to publish articles on a regular basis, at least a few times a week, otherwise, the website won’t grow fast enough.

I’ll be publishing articles a lot more often on here so come back soon.

I hope you liked this article on how to get traffic from a blog!
