How to Design a Business Card for Free with Canva

how to design a business card for free

Do you like attending networking events but you don’t have a business card to share with people? Want to learn how to design a business card for free?

Having a business card with your name and your services is not only an excellent way to network but it also makes you feel more professional and official.

Today we’ll learn how to design a business card for free using one of my favorite free design tools, Canva.

I recently decided to make a business card, and I already sent the design to a print shop, the card should arrive in the next few days.

I’ll take you through the same steps I took to make my own business card for my freelance writing services. I admit, the design is not perfect, but its not too bad considering its the first card design I ever made. I’ll edit this article with pictures of my card once it arrives in the mail.

So to start off, we’ll need to open Canva, it’s completely free, and I don’t receive a commission fee for promoting it.

how to design a business card for free

Once you open Canva you’ll see the design dashboard.

Scroll down the design templates until you see a design for “Business Card”.

P.S. You can use Canva’s Business Card templates or you can make your own custom templates, like I did.

To be honest, I didn’t even notice Canva has its own Business Card templates when I made mine, and I probably could have saved a lot of time if I used their templates.

But if you want to make your own, hit the “Custom Dimensions” button and select Inches for dimensions. Most business cards are 3.5 x 2 inches. Canva’s Business Card templates are 8.5 x 5 inches.

We’ll walk you through using Canva’s Business Card templates as well as using custom templates.

Let’s start with Canva.

Making a Business Card with Canva’s Pre-Made Templates:

To make a design, hit the Business Card template, and you’ll see a bunch of pre-made templates in the left-hand sidebar.

Some free templates you can use.

The pre-made templates are petty nice, and they’re definitely worth looking into.

Just hit the one you want to edit, and it will appear in the work-space.

Next, edit the filler content in with your details (name, title, etc) and then do the same on the other side of the card.

Once completed, save it as a PNG and send it off to your print shop!

Yep, it’s that easy!

A fun little feature I added to my card is a QR code.

My QR Code!

QR codes are becoming quite popular so I figured it would be fun to include on my card.

To make your own QR code, visit a QR code generator, I used this one.

Enter your website address and hit “Create”.

Download the QR code and upload it to Canva so you can edit it into your card.

You can make the QR code point to your portfolio or wherever you want – it’s a neat little feature.

So if you’re wondering how to design a business card for free, that’s how you do it.

With a Custom Template:

I used this method to make my card, it’s a little slower but you can edit more elements.

Once you choose the dimensions (3.5 x  2 inches) choose a background or leave it blank for a white background.

Just some of the many backgrounds you can choose.

For examples of business card templates, Google “Business Card Examples” and you’ll see some simple ones that you can use as a reference.

In most cases, a business card doesn’t need to be overly fancy – a white background with your name, title, and contact details is usually enough.

Write your name in bold and larger letters, in whichever font you prefer, and center it.

Under your name, write your job title and align it with your name.

Next, scroll down in the work-space and hit “Add New Page” this will be the other side of the card.

Here you can include your contact details: name, email address, phone number, website, etc.

Update: Cards Arrived.

I added my QR code in this section just for fun.

Then, hit download, and send the files to your print shop!

So now you know how to design a business card for free, and its much easier than you thought.

I highly recommend creating a business card, even if you’re a new freelancer or marketer.

Even if you don’t give it to anywhere and it sits on your desk all day, at least it will make you feel professional.

And when you feel professional you tend to act professional.

Hope you enjoyed this short tutorial.

Two Simple Ways to Boost Social Shares on Your Social Media Profiles

If used correctly, social media can be a gold-mine for marketing and leads.

It’s your duty to find and share useful content on your profiles to boost interaction and lead people back to your website.

But that’s a little easier said than done.

Most people get stuck when it comes to marketing on social media because they don’t know what type of content to share to capture people’s interest.

Well, there are two simple tricks that you can use to create hot content for your social media profiles and boost social shares.

The first tip involves an online photo-editing tool called Canva.

Canva is an awesome free online-based tool that you can use to make cover images for your projects.

Ever see those motivational posts on Facebook with a portrait and a quote from a famous author or artist?

Images like that are shared quite often on social media, and I’m going to show you how to make them.

With Canva, it’s super easy!

First, head over to Canva and create a free account.

It’s totally free, no strings attached.

Next, select the type of project that you need.

I recommend the default “Social Media” template but you can also use “Custom Dimensions” in the top right corner.

Then, drag and drop the elements that you need into the workplace.

The “Layouts” menu has a lot of excellent templates to choose from.

Click on the text area to edit the default text.

You can include any inspiration quote in this area, or you can do something different and use this as a marketing opportunity for your business.

If you have a blog or Twitter account, one idea would be to take snippets from your articles or Tweets, and include them in this text area, with a link to your website at the bottom.

Take a look at the example below.

I made that in a few seconds.

With a little more time, we can make it even prettier, and not only will it spice up the article, but it will also provide us with something to share on social media.

You could even take it a step further and use your personal portrait picture in the background.

Have fun and be creative.

Just remember the point is to create an image for social media because images tend to be shared a lot more than plain text links.

If you want to learn more about marketing on social media, I recommend reading this ultimate guide to marketing on social media.

The second tip is a little simpler, and it’s mainly for Tweets or Facebook statuses.

What you want to do is take a snippet from your article and then share it as a Tweet or Status.

It’s that simple.

It’s a good idea to do this prior to publishing the article, as it provides people with a teaser for the upcoming article.

Take a look at the Tweet below.

Would you read that article?

So that’s it for today, two simple tips that you can use to boost interaction on your social media profiles.

I hope you found those tips useful and I can’t wait to see your results.

Thanks for taking the time to read this short article and don’t forget to leave a comment.

Until next time.

How to Feel Awesome:

“I don’t want to go to work tomorrow”.

Is something that you probably said more often than you care to admit.

It’s something I hear almost every weekend.

The painful realization that tomorrow your time belongs to someone else.

Your time is not yours. It’s your employers.

You’re giving your time to someone else in exchange for cash.

Most people are fine with the deal.

Most people think it’s the only option.

Most people hate Mondays because it’s time to start working again.

5 Expensive Content Marketing Mistakes and How You Can Fix Them in 5 Minutes or Less

Content marketing is one of the best ways to promote a website online. If you are not actively sharing the content on your website you are missing out on a lot of traffic and potential clients!

Unfortunately, content marketing can be a little tricky, and people who are new to online business often make a few expensive content marketing mistakes.

In this article, we will talk about some content marketing mistakes to avoid that are burning a hole in your budget.

On the upside, most of these mistakes are simple and can be fixed with a couple of tweaks,  in fact, most of these mistakes can be fixed in five minutes or less!

If you want to optimize your business website for maximum conversions and save money, then this article is for you.

Content Marketing Mistake #1: Not Investing in Quality Content

Most people, when they start promoting their business online, will assume that their websites should have as much content as possible.

On one hand, there’s some truth to that assumption, but on the other, it can create a lot of problems for your website’s performance.

Most small business owners will hire a search engine optimization company that mass produces chunks of text and publishes the chunks of text on random websites for back-links.

Unfortunately, that’s an expensive mistake.

You should focus on creating and publishing only high quality content on other high quality websites, one article on a top website is much more powerful than hundreds of articles in strange article directories.

Don’t try to write as much content as possible. Don’t hire a company that mass produces content for you (unless the content is decent).

Too many small business owners blow their entire budget on hiring writers that mass product junk content for them.

In a nutshell, avoid hiring back-link companies and other shady online marketing services, it’s not necessary, and it can be harmful to your business.

Content Marketing Mistake #2: Hiring an Inexperienced Content Strategist

Starting a website without a content marketing strategy in place is a common mistake that people make online. I know creating a content strategy can seem like a daunting task, but in reality, it’s really simple.

You simply have to understand your niche and create articles that are more likely to receive a positive response.

Unfortunately, a lot of people who call themselves content strategists don’t fully understand the power of certain types of content. Like I mentioned in the previous section, the most common content marketing tactic (which is harmful now) is to mass produce articles on various websites for back-links.

If your current content strategist recommends the above tactics, maybe it’s time to find a new content strategist.

Content strategists can be expensive, and it’s important to make sure that they have experience to back up the price, otherwise, it’s a waste of money and time.

Wondering what type of content works best for traffic? I talk about it in one of my previous posts but I’ll summarize it here for you.

  • Product Reviews
  • List Articles
  • How to Articles
  • Info Graphics
  • Ultimate Guides
  • Interviews

(Want to learn more about writing content that converts? Check out Stop Pitching Clients)

Use the above content types to create a content schedule and your website will see a wave of targeted traffic guaranteed.

Content Mistake #3: Not Targeting Keywords

All the content on your website should revolve around a few keywords.

The vast majority of small business websites fail to target certain keywords and therefore miss out on a lot of potential traffic and clients.

How do you find keywords to target?

You can either use Google’s Keyword Planner or you can use a keyword research tool that simplifies the data for you and makes it possible to create lists of keywords.

It’s called Jaaxy

Long-tail keywords are also important.

Look into keyword research and learn the ropes, it’s not as complicated as it seems, and avoid keyword stuffing and other black-hat marketing tactics.

Content Marketing Mistake #4: Publishing Guest Posts on Unrelated Websites

As I mentioned earlier, a lot of small business owners hire marketing companies that often engage in immoral marketing strategies.

I don’t mean to say that all marketing agencies are worthless, on the contrary, I believe there are plenty of top-notch marketing agencies out there, it’s only a matter of finding the right company for your needs.

On the other hand, there are also a lot of scam artists and other people who would be more than happy to separate you from your hard earned cash.

With that in mind, a lot of these so called marketing agencies (or search engine optimization companies) will claim to publish articles (with a link back to your website) on various blogs for back-links and traffic.

The problem is that they rarely list the blogs that will publish your content. In most cases, they publish the articles as guest posts on unrelated websites with little traffic. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that this is a bad marketing tactic.

The solution, however, is simple; find related websites and publish your own guest posts. Contrary to popular opinion, it’s not difficult to publish a guest post on a popular website. Guest posting is one of the most popular content marketing strategies out there and one of the most effective as well.

When it comes down to it, all you need is an excellent idea, an article idea that benefits the website’s business and also promotes your business. I recommend checking out my blog-post writing tips.

Can’t write? Maybe I can help.

Content Marketing Mistake #5: Inefficient Link Sharing on Social Media

Social media plays an important role in content marketing but most people don’t use it to it’s full potential.

I recommend creating a Twitter and Facebook account for your business, those are the two social media websites that will benefit your business the most. There are others that are worth looking into too, like Linked or Pinterest, but I have found that Twitter and Facebook are the most effective.

I suggest that you avoid sharing links to your website in random Facebook groups; that’s one of the best ways to be flagged as a spammer, and Facebook doesn’t appreciate spammers.

You should sync all your social media accounts with your website and make sure that all your content is shared on social media automatically; it will safe you the trouble of manually sharing the links. This will free up more time in your schedule and make it easier for your followers to interact with your content.

Next, focus on building a loyal following on social media and be as active as possible, that means, replying to comments, interacting with followers, engaging in activities, and more.

So we are reaching the end of this article, let’s wrap it up with some more content marketing advice.

Content marketing is not that complicated, and it shouldn’t be expensive, most content marketing strategies are free. Unfortunately, a lot of business owners fall for the shady promises of gurus and end up wasting a lot of money on strange marketing tactics.

If you noticed that you are experiencing one or all of the points discussed in this article, then make some changes, I guarantee you will see some positive improvements.

How to Start a Home Based Business Online in 24 Hours or Less

So you want to learn how to start a home based business online? That’s awesome, this article will show you how to do just that…

Starting a business from your home as never been easier, there are hundreds of tools, services, and products to turn your dream into a reality.

In this article, we will discuss some basic home based business ideas, and how to scale them into a profitable source of income.

Nowadays the internet is littered with promises of a home based business. I’m sure you have seen the advertisements with low quality graphics and comic-sans fonts that seem to pop up on every website that you visit.

“Make a thousand dollars a day!” they scream at you from all corners of the internet, hooking desperate people with promises of wealth while they take your cash and run.

It’s a nuisance and most of those links are scams. Too many scams and too much misinformation, is it really possible to start a home based business?

Of course it is!

I’m here to tell you that it is possible. I’ll even point you in the right direction. Once you’re done reading this article you will realize that it’s not as difficult as people make it seem to start a home based business.

In fact, it’s really quite easy!

First off, there are many different types of home based businesses. I can’t cover all of them, but we will talk about the basic home based business plan; make a website and make it profitable.

In this article you will learn about some potential home-based business ideas. You’ll learn how to set up a simple website, the basics of search engine optimization, and some tips on how to make your website profitable. You should be able to take it from there.

So if you are wondering how to start a home based business online then you came to the right place!

Turns out you can create a business online in just a few hours.

Step one: Create Your Website

There’s a lot of information about how to create a website online, so if you are confused, Google will have the answers you seek. In general, a website is easy to set up; all you need is a hosting account and a domain name.

But first you need to decide on the purpose of your business. What’s your idea? What’s your business plan? Is there a need for your services?

Most people start working online, dabble in a few projects, create a website or two, and then give-up because the traffic doesn’t show up and no sales are made. I know because it happened to me.

The first website that you create will likely not be successful, unless you base it on solid research.

It’s incredibly important to decide on the topic of your website before you start working on the actual website. Otherwise, all the articles that you publish will be random and it will be difficult to attract highly targeted traffic.

Forget about your passion, unless you’re an expert in a particular industry that you’re passionate about you should not create a website based on your passion. You should create a website that is based on a need in the marketplace.

Strangely enough, the online world is much like the offline world, businesses need to solve a problem or make something easier, it’s the same with websites. Most people don’t follow that rule and end up launching businesses that crash and burn a few months later and are left wondering what happened.

So once you have your website under control and in your hands, here are some business ideas that you can attach to it…

1. Write a Blog

A website gives you a platform to share your thoughts and experiences with the world, that’s one of the reasons blogging is such a popular activity; people want to be heard.

Similarly, most people want to read blogs that are entertaining and honestly reveal the thoughts and experiences of the author.

Blogs can be turned into highly profitable websites, if done correctly, read this article on how to turn a blog into a cash machine.

Blogging is one type of home based business that does not require much at all, all you have to do is write about a topic, over and over, until your website is full of well-written articles. The articles will bring in traffic and you can use the traffic to sell products.

(Maybe you don’t want to write articles, in that case, I can write articles for you)

So blogging is one home based business that can be setup in a matter of minutes. If you treat it like a business, it will grow like a business, don’t be casual about it.

Word-press is the easiest platform for bloggers, host your own blog and avoid sub-domains like Blog Spot.

Okay, so let’s say that you don’t want to create a business that is based on writing articles about a particular topic, that’s fine, there are still plenty of other options for you.

2. Be a Consultant

Do you have a particular skill or knowledge about a specific industry that can benefit other people?

One home based business idea would be to provide consultations. Business owners are always on the look-out for people who can benefit their business in one way or another, that person can be you.

You can create a simple website with a list of your services, rates, and other information, then it’s just a matter of contacting business owners and advertising your services. It’s not as complicated as you think.

Just make sure to provide a valuable service. You can setup a simple consultant website in a few minutes.

3. Create a Portfolio Website

Do you know how to create cool logos with Photoshop?

Can you write?

What about web-design?

What services can you provide to people?

Create a portfolio for your services. I know a few people who have websites for their services and clients often contact them directly through their websites.

Just throw up some samples of previous work and create a professional portfolio, complete with rates and detailed information about your services.

The next step is to market your website and try to bring in traffic, like, with a business blog (I can help you write articles)!

Portfolio websites are perfect for freelancers. You can even create a business card for your website and use it at networking events. I’m in the process of creating mine.

Below is a list of some freelance skills that you can offer people…

  • Photoshop
  • Web Design
  • Consultations
  • Data Entry
  • Virtual Assistant
  • Sales
  • Social Media Management
  • Online Marketing
  • Proofreading
  • Accounting

Can’t do any of those with confidence?

That’s okay, here’s another idea…

4. Launch a Startup

Most of the most popular websites nowadays started as simple websites that nobody would have cared much about, but they filled a need, solved a problem, and slowly evolved into a powerhouse.

You can create a Startup on a much smaller budget than you think. Some people only invest money into an hosting account and a domain name and diligently work on their websites.

There are hundreds of differs services that you can offer people online. It just takes a bit of outside the box thinking and an unbreakable will to complete your project.

That’s It:

So there you have it, four ways to start a home business online, all of these ideas don’t require much initial investment at all.

Now you have a better idea of how to start a home based business online!
