Content marketing is one of the best ways to promote a website online.
If you are not actively sharing the content on your website you are missing out on a lot of traffic and potential clients!
Unfortunately, content marketing can be a little tricky, and people who are new to online business often make a few expensive content marketing mistakes.
In this article, we will talk about some content marketing mistakes to avoid that are burning a hole in your budget.
On the upside, most of these mistakes are simple and can be fixed with a couple of tweaks, in fact, most of these mistakes can be fixed in five minutes or less!
If you want to optimize your business website for maximum conversions and save money, then this article is for you.
Content Marketing Mistakes:
Mistake #1: Not Investing in Quality Content
Most people, when they start promoting their business online, will assume that their websites should have as much content as possible.
On one hand, there’s some truth to that assumption, but on the other, it can create a lot of problems for your website’s performance.
Most small business owners will hire a search engine optimization company that mass produces chunks of text and publishes the chunks of text on random websites for back-links.
Unfortunately, that’s an expensive mistake.
You should focus on creating only high quality content on other high quality websites; one article on a top website is much more powerful than hundreds of articles in strange article directories.
Don’t try to write as much content as possible. Don’t hire a company that mass produces content for you (unless the content is decent).
Too many small business owners blow their entire budget on hiring writers that mass product junk content for them.
In a nutshell, avoid hiring back-link companies and other shady online marketing services, it’s not necessary, and it can be harmful to your business.
Mistake #2: Hiring an Inexperienced Content Strategist
Starting a website without a content marketing strategy in place is a common mistake that people make online. I know creating a content strategy can seem like a daunting task, but in reality, it’s really simple.
You simply have to understand your niche and create articles that are more likely to receive a positive response.
Unfortunately, a lot of people who call themselves content strategists don’t fully understand the power of certain types of content.
Like I mentioned in the previous section, the most common content marketing tactic (which is harmful now) is to mass produce articles on various websites for back-links.
If your current content strategist recommends the above tactics, maybe it’s time to find a new content strategist.
Content strategists can be expensive and it’s important to make sure that they have experience to back up the price, otherwise, it’s a waste of money and time.
Wondering what type of content works best for traffic? I talk about it in one of my previous posts but I’ll summarize it here for you.
- Product Reviews
- List Articles
- How to Articles
- Info Graphics
- Ultimate Guides
Use the above content types to create a content schedule and your website will see a wave of targeted traffic guaranteed.
Mistake #3: Not Targeting Keywords
All the content on your website should revolve around a few keywords.
The vast majority of small business websites fail to target certain keywords and therefore miss out on a lot of potential traffic and clients.
How do you find keywords to target?
You can either use Google’s Keyword Planner or you can use a keyword research tool that simplifies the data for you and makes it possible to create lists of keywords.
Look into keyword research and learn the ropes, it’s not as complicated as it seems, and avoid keyword stuffing and other black-hat marketing tactics.
Mistake #4: Publishing Guest Posts on Unrelated Websites
As I mentioned earlier, a lot of small business owners hire marketing companies that often engage in immoral marketing strategies.
I don’t mean to say that all marketing agencies are worthless.
On the contrary, I believe there are plenty of top-notch marketing agencies out there, it’s only a matter of finding the right company for your needs.
On the other hand, there are also a lot of scam artists and other people who would be more than happy to separate you from your hard earned cash.
With that in mind, a lot of these so called marketing agencies (or search engine optimization companies) will claim to publish articles (with a link back to your website) on various blogs for back-links and traffic.
The problem is that they rarely list the blogs that will publish your content.
In most cases, they publish the articles as guest posts on unrelated websites with little traffic. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that this is a bad marketing tactic.
The solution, however, is simple; find related websites and publish your own guest posts.
Contrary to popular opinion, it’s not difficult to publish a guest post on a popular website.
Guest posting is one of the most popular content marketing strategies out there and one of the most effective as well.
Mistake #5: Inefficient Link Sharing on Social Media
Social media plays an important role in content marketing but most people don’t use it to it’s full potential.
I recommend creating a Twitter and Facebook account for your business, those are the two social media websites that will benefit your business the most.
There are others that are worth looking into too, like Linked or Pinterest, but I have found that Twitter and Facebook are the most effective.
I suggest that you avoid sharing links to your website in random Facebook groups; that’s one of the best ways to be flagged as a spammer, and Facebook doesn’t appreciate spammers.
You should sync all your social media accounts with your website and make sure that all your content is shared on social media automatically.
It will save you the trouble of manually sharing the links. This will free up more time in your schedule and make it easier for your followers to interact with your content.
Next, focus on building a loyal following on social media and be as active as possible, that means, replying to comments, interacting with followers, engaging in activities, and more.
So we are reaching the end of this article, let’s wrap it up with some more content marketing advice.
Content marketing is not that complicated, and it shouldn’t be expensive.
Most content marketing strategies are free. Unfortunately, a lot of business owners fall for the shady promises of gurus and end up wasting a lot of money on strange marketing tactics.
If you noticed that you are experiencing one or all of the points discussed in this article, then make some changes, I guarantee you will see some positive improvements.
